About Project Alpha
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and the March of Dimes began collaboratively implementing Project Alpha in 1980. The collaborative project is structured around 3 primary goals designed to provide education, motivation, and skill-building on issues of responsibility, relationships, teen pregnancy, and sexually transmitted diseases for young males ages 12-18 years.
The 3 Primary Goals of Project Alpha
- Sharing knowledge by combating ignorance and fear with factual information,
- Changing attitudes by providing motivation toward positive changes in sexual behavior, and
- Providing skills by creating a sense of empowerment and self-esteem.
To achieve these goals, the program is structured into a series of workshops and informational sessions conducted by the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., as well as subject matter experts and professional service providers. Each session is designed to provide young men with the most current and accurate current information as it relates to:
Sexual Awareness
Concentrating on continual engagement and interaction with young men including strong messaging on abstinence, teen pregnancy, contraception, and safe sex.
Teen Pregnancy
The Foundation recognizes that teen pregnancy is a significant problem that affects our society and Prince George’s County. Based on a statement in the Prince George’s County 2006-2010 Consolidated Plan; “the Prince George’s County rate of birth to adolescent mothers, less than 18 years old, ranked the highest within the National Capital Area.” According to this study, adolescent mothers are more likely to drop out of high school, experience unemployment, or if employed, earn lower wages than women who begin childbearing after age 20; and, children born to teen mothers face increased risks of low birth weight, developmental problems, and poverty.
Male Responsibility & Accountability
Educate young men on sexuality, fatherhood, and the role of males in relationships. The strength of our programming model is based on the concept of responsibility, accountability, respect, and the role of males in relationships.
